On April 16, 2023, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Elsmere Police responded to a reported shooting in the unit block of Elsmere Boulevard in the Silverbrook Gardens neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered that two individuals had forcibly entered an apartment, shooting 31-year-old Shaheed "Heedy" Smith once in the chest and robbing another victim before fleeing the scene. Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
