On February 4, 2003, 39-year-old Christine Pepin was fatally shot in her Casco, Maine, home by her longtime live-in boyfriend, Gary Sweeney. The couple resided in a modest 16-by-16-foot cabin lacking running water and a septic system. On the night of the incident, after an evening of drinking, Sweeney retrieved a .22-caliber revolver from a drawer, ostensibly to fire shots out the front door as a signal to a neighbor.
