In the quiet town of Richmond, Maine, the life of 37-year-old Niomi Mello, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in a devastating act of domestic violence. On what is believed to be the late evening of Friday, December 14, 2018, or early the next morning, a fatal series of events unfolded inside her Post Road mobile home.
The grim discovery was made on Saturday morning by Mello's 11-year-old son.
Upon waking, he found his mother and her longtime boyfriend, 46-year-old Kirk Alexander Jr., deceased in the kitchen. The young boy then bravely ran to a nearby convenience store to summon help.
Law enforcement officials were called to the scene, and an investigation into the deaths began. The Maine State Police later confirmed the tragic circumstances of the incident. Their investigation concluded that Kirk Alexander Jr. had shot and killed Niomi Mello with a 9mm handgun before turning the weapon on himself. Both individuals died from gunshot wounds to the head.
The case was officially ruled a murder-suicide, with Alexander identified as the sole suspect in Mello's death. As the perpetrator was also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the homicide. Authorities labeled the event a domestic violence homicide, marking it as one of several such tragic incidents in Maine that year. Mello's sister later revealed that Niomi had been in an unhealthy relationship, and friends and family expressed their shock and grief on social media following the news. In addition to her young son, Niomi Mello was also the mother of a 16-year-old daughter.
