On September 1, 2006, James Whitehurst, a 50-year-old handyman from Batesville, Arkansas, was residing at the Black Bear Bed & Breakfast in Newry, Maine. He had been assisting the inn's owner, Julie Bullard, with maintenance tasks. That day, Christian Nielsen, a 31-year-old cook who also lived at the inn, invited Whitehurst on a fishing trip to nearby Upton.
