On January 27, 2010, 19-year-old John "Bobby" Surles was fatally shot during an altercation on Cumberland Street in Bangor, Maine. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when Surles and 18-year-old Zachary Carr, along with their respective groups, confronted each other. During the confrontation, Carr drew a 9mm handgun and shot Surles, who was unarmed, in the back while he lay on the ground.
