On May 31, 2011, a promising young White/Caucasian man's life was cut tragically short. Andrew Holland, a 23-year-old male from Farmington, Maine, had recently celebrated his birthday and graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington with a degree in education. He was a quiet and gentle person with a deep love for politics, music, and the Boston Red Sox. Friends and family remember him as a passionate individual, known for engaging in deep conversations rather than small talk.
He had aspirations of one day becoming a college professor and was planning to take some time off to work and save money before pursuing graduate studies.
The night of his death, Andrew was in an apartment on High Street in Farmington with his friend, 23-year-old Ryan Ouimet, and another friend. All three were recent graduates of the University of Maine at Farmington and were working together for the summer. Inside the apartment, Ouimet was handling a handgun he owned when it discharged, striking Andrew. Emergency services were called, and Andrew was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
In the wake of the shooting, Ryan Ouimet of Coltsneck, New Jersey, was arrested and charged in connection with Andrew's death. Initially facing a charge of elevated aggravated assault, the charge was later upgraded to manslaughter. The incident was a somber end to what should have been a celebratory time for the group of friends, and it left a community mourning the loss of a young man who was just beginning to forge his path in the world.
