On January 22, 2017, Jon Michael Alspaugh, 57, of Waldoboro, Maine, died following an exchange of gunfire with local police. Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at Alspaugh's residence on River Bend Road around 1 a.m. Upon arrival, Officer John Lash encountered Alspaugh, who fired three shots at the officer, striking him once in the torso. Lash, protected by his bulletproof vest, returned fire, fatally wounding Alspaugh.
