On November 27, 2016, 55-year-old Richard J. "Rick" Diekema was found shot to death in his mobile home on Songo School Road in Naples, Maine. The suspected shooter, 59-year-old Norman J. Strobel, had recently moved in with Diekema after the two met during brief incarcerations at the Cumberland County Jail earlier that year. Strobel had a history of violent offenses, including domestic assault and sexual assault, and was under a protection from abuse order filed by his ex-girlfriend.
