In a quiet Auburn, Maine, apartment on June 19, 2022, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 21-year-old Kelzie Marie Caron, a White female and mother of two young daughters. Responding to a report of a cardiac arrest at a residence on Fourth Street, police and fire personnel made a grim discovery. Inside, they found the bodies of Caron and a man, 21-year-old Pierre Langlois of Connecticut. The state's chief medical examiner would later rule both deaths as homicides.
For hours, Caron's two young daughters, aged four and two, were left alone in the apartment with their mother's body until they were found by their grandmother.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly became a multi-state effort, involving law enforcement agencies in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maryland. Investigators were searching for a black 2018 Hyundai Tucson in connection with the case. Their efforts led them to a suspect, 34-year-old David Barnett of Bristol, Connecticut, also known by the street names "Slim" and "Cash." Barnett was apprehended in Rockville, Maryland, on July 1, 2022, on a warrant for murder. At the time of his arrest, he also had a nationwide warrant out of New York for a probation violation related to a prior robbery charge.
Following his arrest, Barnett was extradited back to Maine to face two counts of murder and a charge of illegal possession of a firearm. While the specific details of the crime were not extensively released by police, it was reported that Caron and Langlois had been shot to death. Barnett's cellphone was traced to Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, where Caron's car had been found abandoned, and his fingerprints were discovered inside the vehicle. In August 2023, David Barnett pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional or knowing murder. He was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences to be served concurrently. Friends and family remembered Kelzie Caron as a student at Central Maine Community College, where she was studying to become an X-ray technician, and above all, as a devoted mother whose world revolved around her two daughters.
