Kayla Jeanette Kinder, a 22-year-old White woman, was shot in the head inside a Billings Heights home on March 22, 2015. She was rushed to St. Vincent Healthcare and placed on life support; the following day, March 23, she died from her wounds, and her family began the work of saying goodbye. Her obituary would later sketch the outline of a young life rooted in Billings—schools, family, the ordinary details that make a place feel like home.
