The shot was fired by his own father, 40-year-old Cadet Lacunza. He later recounted to authorities that he had been "reckless" in firing his. 357 revolver. At the time of the incident, he believed his family was all near the campfire and stated that he was not aiming at anything in particular. Unseen by his father due to the dense cover of tree branches, Caden was struck in the head by the bullet.
