In the dense woods of Boundary County, Idaho, on August 21, 1992, the life of William Degan, a 42-year-old White / Caucasian male, was cut tragically short. A decorated Deputy U.S. Marshal, Degan was part of a six-man surveillance team tasked with scouting the remote mountain cabin of Randy Weaver, a man who had failed to appear in court on federal firearms charges.
The marshals, clad in camouflage, were attempting to formulate a plan for Weaver's arrest when the situation rapidly deteriorated.
The Weaver family's dog, Striker, detected the marshals' presence, leading to a confrontation at a fork in a trail. Accounts of the ensuing moments differ, but they culminated in a chaotic exchange of gunfire. In the firefight, both Degan and Weaver's 14-year-old son, Samuel, were killed. Degan was fatally wounded by a rifle shot.
The man who fired the shot that killed William Degan was identified as Kevin Harris, a friend of the Weaver family who was present at the cabin. The initial gunfight ignited an 11-day siege of the Weaver property, known as the Ruby Ridge standoff, which drew national attention. Following the standoff, Randy Weaver and Kevin Harris were arrested and faced a variety of federal charges, including the murder of William Degan.
During the subsequent trial, prosecutors alleged that Harris had murdered Degan in cold blood. However, Harris's defense team argued that he had acted in self-defense after Samuel Weaver was shot and killed by the marshals. The physical evidence presented at trial was unable to definitively contradict either the prosecution's or the defense's version of events. Ultimately, a jury acquitted Kevin Harris of the murder charge.
