John Henry Hays, a 59-year-old Civil War veteran and town marshal of Troy, Idaho, was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 27, 1904. He was attempting to arrest Paine Sly, a known troublemaker in the community, for a domestic disturbance.
During the arrest attempt, a shootout ensued, and Hays was fatally wounded. Despite being mortally injured, he managed to return fire and injure Sly. Sly was later apprehended and stood trial for Hays' murder.
