In the early evening coolness of a spring day in Buffalo, New York, the life of 22-year-old Matthew D. Smith, an African American male, was tragically cut short. On April 6, 2013, at approximately 7:20 p.m., gunshots echoed in the vicinity of 98 Rodney Avenue, leaving Smith with fatal wounds from which he would later succumb. The sudden violence of the act sent ripples of shock and grief through his community.
