In the summer of 2014, a year marked by a surge in violence in Buffalo, New York, the life of 21-year-old Ivanilson Mendes was cut short. On July 6th, the young male, identified as African-American / Black, was shot and killed on Wasmuth Avenue. His death added to a grim statistic in a city that experienced one of its most violent years in recent memory, with a significant increase in homicides, the majority of which were the result of gunfire.
