In the late summer of 2019, the life of Rory Dewaine Neddo, a 30-year-old White male from Idaho Falls, Idaho, came to a tragic and abrupt end. On the evening of September 2nd, Neddo was fatally shot in the driveway of a home in Bonneville County. The incident stemmed from a heated dispute over a woman with whom both Neddo and the shooter, Marshall Hendricks, had a relationship.
The conflict escalated when Neddo went to the residence on 5th West to confront Hendricks.
Witnesses reported that the two men had argued prior to the physical confrontation. Neddo was driven to the location by his brother and, upon exiting the vehicle, approached Hendricks. An argument ensued, and Hendricks, who was 29 at the time, shot Neddo in the face. After the shooting, Hendricks fled the scene.
Law enforcement was quickly notified, and Hendricks was located a short time later by Jefferson County deputies and Idaho State Police. He had driven to the home of a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy and admitted to shooting someone. Hendricks was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Both Neddo and Hendricks had extensive criminal histories.
The ensuing legal proceedings revealed a complex backstory. The woman at the center of the dispute had been in a long-term relationship with Neddo before it ended several months prior to the shooting. She and Hendricks were in a relationship at the time of the incident. Before the fatal encounter, Neddo had reportedly called Hendricks, and during the speakerphone conversation, stated his intention to come over and fight.
Marshall Hendricks was ultimately found guilty of second-degree murder by a jury. In October 2022, he was sentenced to a fixed term of 11 years in prison with an indeterminate period of 25 years. During his sentencing, Hendricks offered an emotional apology to Neddo's family, expressing remorse for his actions. The woman over whom the dispute arose later married Hendricks.
