On the evening of May 8, 2014, Travontae Calloway, a 27-year-old Black male, was celebrating his birthday with his friend, 28-year-old Elliott Bailey, and his girlfriend at his Boise, Idaho, apartment. The celebration was tragically cut short when a gunman forced his way into the residence and opened fire, killing both Calloway and Bailey and wounding Calloway's girlfriend. Both men died from multiple gunshot wounds at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center.
The shooting, police quickly determined, was not a random act of violence.
The investigation that followed unraveled a murder-for-hire plot rooted in the theft of 30 pounds of marijuana. The man who orchestrated the killings was Anthony J. Robins Jr., a 34-year-old from Fremont, California, who believed Calloway and Bailey had stolen the drugs from him. Robins hired John C. Douglas, a 44-year-old from Reading, Pennsylvania, to carry out the executions. Douglas was the man who entered the apartment and began shooting. The day after the shooting, Boise police arrested 34-year-old Samari P. Winn, who was charged with leading Douglas to the apartment on the night of the murders.
Further investigation led to the arrest of a fourth individual, 22-year-old Anton Philip Raider of Boise, who was connected to the crime through a white cargo van used by the suspects that was registered in his name. Raider eventually pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting attempted murder. In January 2015, Anthony Robins Jr. was arrested at his home in California. John C. Douglas was apprehended in July 2014 and extradited to Idaho to face charges.
In January 2016, a jury found John C. Douglas guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Anthony Robins Jr. was convicted of two counts of aiding and abetting first-degree murder and one count of aiding and abetting attempted murder. Samari Winn was also found guilty of two counts of aiding and abetting first-degree murder and one count of aiding and abetting attempted first-degree murder. For his role as the gunman, John C. Douglas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
