In a quiet area of Pingree, Idaho, the life of David Lee Davis, a 30-year-old Caucasian male, came to a violent and tragic end in February 2017. A father of three, remembered by friends and family as a loving man and an avid skateboarder, Davis was fatally shot at the residence of 48-year-old Melonie Smith. The events that unfolded painted a grim picture of drug use and violence, culminating in a harrowing crime that would leave a lasting mark on the small community.
The incident began
on February 10, 2017, when Kevin Day, a former roommate of Davis, shot him in both legs with a small-caliber weapon shortly after Davis arrived at Smith's home. These initial wounds were not fatal, and it was reported that they had been bandaged. Day, who harbored resentment towards Davis due to past conflicts, fled the scene after giving the pistol to Smith. What happened next, however, escalated the situation into a homicide. Witnesses later testified that Smith admitted to killing Davis, stating she shot him in the back of the head execution-style with a high-powered rifle. A man named Guy Lopez, whom Smith had called for help, alerted law enforcement after Smith confessed the details of the killing to him, even describing it as putting a dog out of its misery.
When law enforcement arrived at Smith's residence on February 11, they discovered Davis's body in the kitchen, wrapped in black plastic and bound with wire. The subsequent investigation revealed that Smith had attempted to burn some of Davis's remains in her wood stove and conceal other evidence. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the back of the head and also found toxic levels of methamphetamine and hydrocodone in his system. Smith was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and destruction, concealment, or alteration of evidence.
During her trial, Smith maintained her innocence, attempting to place the blame for the fatal shot on Kevin Day. However, the jury returned guilty verdicts on both counts. In January 2018, Melonie Smith was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of David Lee Davis. Kevin Day pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and the use of a deadly weapon for his role in shooting Davis in the legs and testified as part of a plea agreement.
