In the late hours of March 15, 2021, a 24-year-old Hispanic male named Guy Lopez II was shot and killed near the Boise State University campus. The incident unfolded on Chrisway Drive when Lopez met with two men, Matthew Allen Crawford, 22, and Devoune Mosley, 23, under the pretense of a drug transaction. Crawford and Mosley had devised a plan to rob Lopez of Xanax.
Mosley acted as the driver, while Crawford intended to ambush Lopez.
The planned robbery took a violent turn when Lopez resisted. He managed to create distance and drew his own firearm, firing a single shot. In response, Crawford fired multiple rounds, striking Lopez several times. After the shooting, Crawford and Mosley fled the scene, leaving Lopez wounded in the street. Boise police officers, responding to reports of shots fired, discovered Lopez and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Ada County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Lopez died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
Law enforcement quickly identified Crawford and Mosley as the suspects, and they were arrested shortly after the incident. Both men faced charges related to the robbery and murder. Matthew Allen Crawford ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Devoune Mosley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and received a sentence of up to 33 years in prison, with parole eligibility after 13 years. As part of their plea agreements, other charges, including first-degree murder for Mosley, were dismissed.
