In the early morning hours of November 16, 2023, a sudden noise outside his Twin Falls, Idaho, home prompted 32-year-old Fred Rodriquez to investigate. A White/Caucasian male, husband, and father of three, he stepped out into his own driveway to confront a stranger, a decision that would tragically end his life. What unfolded was a fatal encounter that left a family grieving and a community in shock.
Rodriquez was shot during the confrontation and, despite the arrival and first-aid efforts of police officers, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The suspect, or suspects, fled the scene in a white truck.
The investigation into the death of Fred Rodriquez moved swiftly. The day after the shooting, on November 17, police arrested 18-year-old Mi'Quavis Dewayne Taylor in connection with the incident. A second suspect, 18-year-old Kaden James Thomson, was arrested shortly thereafter. Both teenagers were subsequently charged with first-degree murder, in addition to a string of other charges including burglary, grand theft, and attempted grand theft. This suggested that the fatal shooting was connected to a wider criminal enterprise.
Court documents later revealed a more detailed picture of the events leading up to that fatal morning. Taylor and Thomson were allegedly involved in a series of car thefts in the days prior to the shooting. On the night of the incident, they drove a stolen white pickup to Rodriquez's street with the intention of stealing a van. Rodriquez, armed with a baseball bat, confronted Thomson, at which point Thomson is alleged to have shot him. After the shooting, the two fled to Boise, where they were eventually apprehended after a police chase and crash. During questioning, both suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement in some of the crimes.
