A journey to a family reunion on a summer afternoon turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy for Dale George Schultz, a 66-year-old man from Salt Lake City, Utah, and his wife, Reinette. The couple had stopped at a Tesla charging station situated behind a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, when their lives were irrevocably altered by a sudden act of violence. Dale, a gifted artist, devoted family man, and U.S. Air Force veteran, was fatally shot while in his vehicle. His wife, Reinette, was also wounded in the attack but survived her injuries. Dale was remembered by his family as a humble, hardworking, and kind man who was the rock of their family and a hero to his children and grandchildren. He was an artist skilled in various mediums, an avid photographer, and a beloved member of his community, known for his generosity and his deep love for his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years.

The unprovoked attack was carried out by 24-year-old Chad Williams, who opened fire in and around the bustling restaurant that had recently celebrated its grand opening. The shooting rampage claimed the lives of two other individuals in addition to Dale Schultz: 23-year-old Ashley Garibay, an In-N-Out employee from Stockton, California, and 59-year-old Christopher Claunch of Hagerman, Idaho. Several other people were also injured during the chaotic event. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as Williams, armed with what was described as an AR-style rifle, fired shots in the parking lot and near the drive-thru. The violence was brought to an end when the gunman, Chad Williams, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials worked to piece together the events of that tragic day. Investigators confirmed that Williams was the sole shooter and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. However, a motive for the senseless act of violence remained elusive to investigators. As there was no surviving suspect, the case did not proceed to an arrest, trial, or conviction. The focus of the investigation shifted to understanding what led to the devastating attack that cut short the lives of three innocent people and left a community in mourning. The overview of the case is that of a sudden and random mass shooting perpetrated by a lone gunman who then took his own life, leaving behind a wake of grief and unanswered questions for the families of the victims and the community of Twin Falls.
