In a tragic incident on April 3, 2021, a 19-year-old male named Jonah Pandiani was fatally shot in Rutland, Vermont. The event took place at a Quality Inn where Pandiani was with his best friend, Kahliq Richardson.
According to court documents and news reports, Richardson, who was 20 at the time, had a history of drug use and had been using crack cocaine in the hours leading up to the shooting.
The two friends were passing a gun back and forth when it accidentally discharged, striking Pandiani in the head and killing him instantly.
Following an investigation by the Vermont State Police, the Rutland Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kahliq Richardson faced legal consequences for his role in Pandiani's death. He was sentenced in federal court to 30 months of imprisonment for possessing a firearm while being an unlawful user of controlled substances. In addition to the federal charge, Richardson also faced a state charge of voluntary manslaughter. During sentencing for the federal crime, the judge noted the recklessness of Richardson's actions that led to the death of his friend.
