In the early morning hours of November 22, 2020, a disturbance call led Rutland City Police to the Quality Inn on South Main Street. Inside one of the rooms, they discovered the body of Jonathon G. Houghton, a 35-year-old Black/African American man from Holyoke, Massachusetts. The initial assessment of the scene suggested that the death was suspicious, prompting a joint investigation between the Vermont State Police and the Rutland City Police Department.
An autopsy was conducted at the
Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington, which determined that Houghton's death was a homicide. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso. Despite the violent nature of the crime, investigators stated they believed it to be an isolated incident and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
As the investigation into Houghton's murder continued, law enforcement officials urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward. Investigators with the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigations, along with the Crime Scene Search Team, worked together on the active and ongoing case. However, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the shooting, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the death of Jonathon G. Houghton.
