On October 5, 2023, 77-year-old Dr. Honoree Fleming, a retired dean and professor at Vermont State University's Castleton campus, was fatally shot while walking on the Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail near the university. Authorities responded to reports of a deceased woman on the trail around 4:30 p.m. An autopsy confirmed that Dr. Fleming died from a gunshot wound to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.
