On the warm summer evening of August 15, 2020, a celebration turned into a scene of tragedy on Massachusetts Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island. Kiovany Diaz, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was sitting in a parked Jeep outside his home, enjoying his daughter's seventh birthday party. The festive atmosphere was shattered at approximately 10:40 p.m. when a dark-colored, newer model Honda Accord approached.
An individual from the rear passenger window of the car opened fire, striking Diaz in the head.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Diaz's brother and aunt, who were present at the scene, rushed him to Rhode Island Hospital. Despite their swift actions and the efforts of medical staff, Kiovany Diaz succumbed to his injuries the following day. His death marked the third homicide in the city of Providence in just over a week and the eighth for the year, causing concern for local law enforcement about a surge in violence.
Family members described Diaz as an outstanding individual and a graduate of Cranston High School West who worked as a forklift operator. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Kiovanalee, with whom he cherished spending time, and he also enjoyed fishing. The Providence Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide, stating that while they had some leads and persons of interest, no arrests had been made. The case remains an active investigation as authorities continue to seek information from the public to bring those responsible for Kiovany Diaz's death to justice.
