In the summer of 2022, the life of 15-year-old GerVontae Tilson was tragically cut short. On the late Saturday night of July 23rd, in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island, the teenager was found shot in a driveway on Wallace Street. Police received a call for a person shot shortly after 11 p.m. and upon arrival, they discovered GerVontae, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later stated they believed the shooting was a targeted attack and that Tilson had been with two other individuals when at least one assailant, possibly more, opened fire.
Known affectionately as "Tae," GerVontae was described by his mother as an intelligent, brave, talented, and kind-hearted young man who was deeply loved. He grew up in both Johnston and West Warwick and was remembered for his contagious laugh and a smile that could light up a room. He had a passion for basketball and making music. His family was central to his life; he shared a close, inseparable bond with his younger brother, who was only eleven months his junior. He was also a protective older brother to his eight-year-old sister and a loving advocate for his autistic brother. At the time of his death, GerVontae was anticipating the birth of his own child, a daughter he was excited to meet.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the senseless loss of a young life. A vigil was held on the Sunday night following his death in the same area where he was killed. His family organized a fundraiser to help with funeral expenses, and the community responded with support. The investigation into his death continued, and in late August 2022, Providence police confirmed that they had taken a suspect into custody in connection with the shooting.
