In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Providence, Rhode Island, the life of a veteran police officer, James Lloyd Allen, a 50-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. On April 17, 2005, inside the very headquarters of the Providence Police Department where he had served for 27 years, a routine interrogation turned deadly. Detective Allen was questioning a suspect in connection with the stabbing and robbery of an elderly woman that had occurred earlier that day.
The suspect,
who was not under formal arrest and had his handcuffs removed during the questioning, suddenly launched an attack on the seasoned detective. In a violent struggle, the suspect managed to gain control of Detective Allen's service weapon. With the officer's own handgun, the assailant fired, inflicting a fatal wound. The chaos continued as the suspect then shot out a third-floor window of the police headquarters and leaped from the building in a desperate attempt to escape.
The brazen escape was short-lived. Law enforcement officers quickly apprehended the suspect a few blocks away from the scene of the crime. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder. The following year, on October 10, 2006, justice was served as the suspect was found guilty of the murder of Detective James Lloyd Allen and was sentenced to life in prison. In a posthumous recognition of his dedication and ultimate sacrifice, James Lloyd Allen was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant. He left behind a grieving family, including his wife, two daughters, and his father, a retired police captain.
