On April 17, 2005, Detective Sergeant James Lloyd Allen, a 50-year-old veteran of the Providence Police Department, was fatally shot during an interrogation at police headquarters. Allen, who had dedicated 27 years to the force, was questioning Esteban Carpio regarding the stabbing of an 85-year-old woman earlier that day.
