On the morning of May 9, 2024, in Huron, South Dakota, 41-year-old Nichole "Nikki" Klich, a White/Caucasian female, was fatally shot. The incident prompted an investigation by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Huron Police Department. On the day of the shooting, law enforcement asked residents of the Colonial Apartments, in the area of 10th Street and Minnesota Avenue S.W., to voluntarily evacuate for several hours.
Friends remembered Klich as a funny, honest, and dedicated parent with a contagious smile and laugh.
The investigation led to the arrest of a 15-year-old male suspect who was charged with first-degree murder. Due to the suspect's age, the case began in juvenile court. In June 2024, a second suspect, a 15-year-old female, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Klich's death. Authorities stated that the two teens knew each other and were both involved in the death of the victim.
Both teenagers were held in the Beadle County Juvenile Detention Center. Prosecutors have stated their intention to seek the transfer of both cases to adult court. The prosecution of the case was transferred from Beadle County to Brookings County due to a potential conflict of interest with the newly appointed state's attorney in Beadle County.
