On September 17, 2015, in Platte, South Dakota, nine-year-old Kailey Grace Westerhuis was tragically killed along with her family. Authorities determined that her father, Scott Westerhuis, fatally shot his wife, Nicole, and their four children—Michael, Connor, Jaeci, and Kailey—before setting their home ablaze and taking his own life.
