In June 1912, Marshal Daniel C. Hansen, aged 42, was serving the community of Cokeville, Wyoming. On June 20, 1912, he was investigating an extortion attempt directed at a local bank. The bank's owner had received a threatening note demanding $1,500 in cash, with the lives of the banker and his family at stake if the demand was not met. The note was signed by two notorious outlaws known as the Whitney Brothers.
