In June 1912, Marshal Daniel C. Hansen, aged 42, was serving the community of Cokeville, Wyoming. On June 20, 1912, he was investigating an extortion attempt directed at a local bank. The bank's owner had received a threatening note demanding $1,500 in cash, with the lives of the banker and his family at stake if the demand was not met.
