In the summer of 1969, a tragic series of events that began with a kidnapping in Texas culminated in the death of a law enforcement officer in Wyoming. On July 15, 1969, Deputy Sheriff William H. Edwards, a 35-year-old White male, was fatally shot while responding to a tense hostage situation unfolding at the Battle Mountain Lodge near Jackson Hole in Sublette County.
