On April 20, 1903, Lieutenant Thomas Kling and Officer John Baxter of the Rawlins Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a local store. The store owner, known for his aggressive behavior toward neighbors and law enforcement, had set up an ambush for the officers. Upon entering the store, both Lieutenant Kling and Officer Baxter were fatally shot.
