On October 31, 1945, Wyoming Game and Fish Department Agents Don Simpson and Bill Lakanen were investigating reports of illegal beaver hunting in the Sierra Madre mountain range near Rawlins, Wyoming. Their inquiry led them to the cabin of Johann Malten, a German immigrant previously arrested for illegal possession of beaver pelts. Malten harbored a vendetta against the agents, having vowed to kill them if they returned to his property.
