Donald Stanley Simpson, a 39-year-old White/Caucasian male, died on October 31, 1945, after riding into the rough country of the Sierra Madre mountains with fellow Wyoming Game and Fish warden Bill Lakanen to investigate reports of illegal beaver hunting near Nugget Gulch, west and southwest of Rawlins, Wyoming. Simpson had built a reputation as a respected game warden based in Saratoga, and that Halloween trip appears to have been one more routine enforcement check into a remote trapper’s cam ...
