On April 20, 1903, in Rawlins, Wyoming, Police Officer John Baxter and Lieutenant Thomas J. Kling responded to reports of gunfire at a local store. The store owner, known for terrorizing his neighbors and law enforcement, had set up an ambush for the officers. Upon entering the store, both officers were fatally shot.
