On April 30, 1995, Lieutenant Steve M. Crerar of the Fremont County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming was fatally shot while transporting a juvenile detainee. The 17-year-old prisoner, who had been residing at the Wyoming Boys' School, had previously run away and was subsequently arrested. During the transport back to the facility, the detainee managed to free himself, seize Lieutenant Crerar's service weapon, and shoot him in the head, resulting in Lieutenant Crerar's death.
