On July 7, 2011, 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant of Wheatland, Wyoming was fatally shot in his family's mobile home. During the same shooting, his two brothers—11-year-old, male, Joseph Raymond Conant, and 18-year-old, male, Everett Eugene “BJ” Conant IV—along with their 33-year-old, male, uncle Nacuma Roland Conant were also killed. Their 35-year-old father, Everett E.
Conant III, carried out the attack.
The shootings took place inside the family's mobile home in Wheatland, Wyoming, a small farming and ranching town of roughly 3,500–3,600 residents. During the rampage, 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant was killed along with his two brothers and uncle, while his mother, Suzette Ann Conant, was shot in the ankle and upper arm but survived her injuries and was treated at a hospital. The attack occurred in the early evening, and police responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire and screaming, arriving on the scene shortly thereafter.
Everett E. Conant III surrendered without resistance after a brief ten-minute standoff with law enforcement. He was cooperative and unarmed upon surrender. Inside the home, authorities found the bodies of the three male juveniles—including 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant—and the adult male victim in their mid-30s, later identified as their uncle. Suzette Conant, the surviving 13-year-old's mother, was found wounded outside and taken to a regional medical center in Cheyenne in stable condition.
The suspect, 35-year-old Everett E. Conant III, was quickly arrested and charged with multiple serious crimes. These included four counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his three sons—including 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant—and his adult brother; one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of his wife; aggravated battery; and unlawful possession of a deadly weapon. He was held without bail and ultimately, in June 2012, entered a plea of no contest to the four counts of first-degree murder. He received five life sentences.
The impact of this tragedy was deeply felt across the tight-knit Wheatland community. A candlelight vigil was held at Wheatland High School for the brothers, including 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant. A communal funeral service held at a local church drew around 200 mourners, and a barbecue fundraiser was organized to help Suzette Conant with her medical and funeral expenses. Through all this, the grief for 13-year-old, male, Charles Glenn Conant and his family was palpable, and the town rallied to support them in the wake of the tragedy.
There is no public record of any other suspects or arrests in connection with the shooting beyond Everett E. Conant III, who is the sole identified perpetrator and is the only person who faced criminal charges.
