On December 24, 2023, Master Sgt. Nicholas "Nick" McLeod Van Pelt, 41, was fatally shot in his Minot, North Dakota, apartment. A native of Ringgold, Georgia, Van Pelt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2001, serving at Minot Air Force Base and deploying to South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Kyrgyzstan. In 2009, he joined the North Dakota Air National Guard's 219th Security Forces Squadron, where he served until his death.
