Shane Francisco, a 44-year-old man from Kahuku, was gone before anyone could truly catch up to the warning signs. By the last Friday of September 2016, his name had already been circulating as a missing person, and the worry around him carried a specific weight: people believed he was emotionally distraught. When his black Jeep Wrangler was finally seen sitting in the parking lot of Turtle Bay Resort on Oʻahu’s North Shore, officers kept watch on it, waiting to see who would return.
