On May 1, 1888, Acting Marshal Owen Kelly of the Warrior Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to arrest two brothers involved in a saloon altercation. The brothers, intoxicated and resisting arrest, escalated the situation when one drew a pistol and shot Marshal Kelly in the stomach. The shooter fled but was apprehended a mile away, while his brother was arrested at the saloon.
