In a quiet home in Warrior, Alabama, an act of kindness took a tragic turn, leading to the deaths of 58-year-old Tommy Ervin Shyrie and 26-year-old Cristy Lynn Pickett. The couple had opened their doors to an acquaintance, Terrence Jermaine Holder, and his girlfriend, offering them a place to stay as they were homeless. This gesture of compassion would ultimately lead to a grim discovery on June 14, 2019.
Concern grew for Pickett's mother when she was unable to reach her daughter for
several days. Arriving at the couple's residence on Bethel Road and receiving no answer at the door, she contacted the authorities. Jefferson County sheriff's deputies entered the home to find a scene of violence. Pickett was found in the hallway, having been shot in the head. Shyrie was discovered in a bedroom, having been shot in the face; prosecutors suggested he may have been trying to hide beside the bed in his final moments. Investigators determined they had been deceased for a few days before being found.
The investigation quickly focused on Terrence Jermaine Holder, a casual acquaintance of the victims. Evidence gathered by detectives pointed to Holder as the perpetrator, and he was subsequently arrested. During questioning, Holder reportedly provided conflicting stories and attempted to implicate two other individuals, though he ultimately confessed to the murders.
In June of 2022, Terrence Jermaine Holder, then 41, was convicted by a Jefferson County jury of capital murder in the deaths of Shyrie and Pickett. Following the conviction, the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
