Death by Force

On May 31, 1905, in Mobile, Alabama, Deputy Sheriff Calvin Childs, aged 35, was fatally shot while performing his duties. A citizen had reported to Deputy Childs that a man had menaced him and threatened to shoot him. As Deputy Childs went to obtain a warrant for the suspect's arrest, the suspect suddenly approached him and opened fire, striking him in the chest. Another deputy quickly returned fire, killing the offender. Deputy Childs succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
