In the late hours of a Monday in Mobile, Alabama, the life of 19-year-old Kevin Benjamin was tragically cut short. On April 30, 2018, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1300 block of North Drive just before midnight. Upon arrival, they discovered Benjamin with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The male victim's death was investigated as a homicide.
The investigation into Benjamin's murder led to the arrests of two suspects.
On May 5, 2018, Brandon Sims, 19, was taken into custody and charged with murder. A second suspect, 19-year-old Shamar Young, turned himself in to the Metro Jail on August 18, 2018. Prosecutors stated that the shooting occurred during a robbery attempt where Sims and Young, along with another individual, had planned to steal marijuana from Benjamin.
Both Brandon Sims and Shamar Young faced legal proceedings for their involvement in Kevin Benjamin's death. The two were ultimately sentenced to three years in prison followed by five years of probation. Young was given credit for the two years and four months he had already served while awaiting trial. Less than a year after his release on probation, Young was arrested again on new charges, including attempting to elude police and resisting arrest, leading to a violation of his probation.
