Police Officer J. Carl Goodwin, aged 33, was fatally shot on June 15, 1918, while serving with the Bessemer Police Department in Bessemer, Alabama. The incident occurred shortly after Officer Goodwin had arrested a man on a vagrancy warrant. Following the arrest, another individual produced a revolver and shot Officer Goodwin, resulting in his death.
