Police Officer Ray Payne, aged 27, lost his life in the line of duty on February 12, 1927, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was fatally shot while attempting to break up a fight between three men. During the altercation, one of the individuals involved produced a handgun and shot Officer Payne.
