In the year 1927, a male Birmingham Police Officer by the name of Ray Payne, at the age of 27, was killed in the line of duty. His death came about when he intervened in a physical altercation involving three men. During his attempt to quell the disturbance, one of the individuals produced a firearm and fatally shot him.
Following the shooting, two suspects were taken into custody. Both individuals faced legal proceedings and were subsequently convicted of first-degree murder.
The initial sentence for both was death. However, this sentence was not ultimately carried out. In 1929, both men were granted new trials, which resulted in their sentences being commuted to life in prison. Further down the line, on August 2, 1941, one of the two convicted men was granted parole. At the time of his death, Officer Payne was survived by his wife and son.
