On the night of July 27, 1941, Chief of Police Jesse Franklin Rickels, aged 48, was on duty in Warrior, Alabama. Around 11:30 p.m., while stationed at a local service station, he observed a man driving into the parking lot. Chief Rickels approached the individual, placed him under arrest, and escorted him back to his patrol car.
