On a late Sunday evening in Warrior, Alabama, the community was shattered by the sudden and violent death of its respected Chief of Police, Jesse Franklin Rickels. On July 27, 1941, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the 48-year-old male lawman was on duty when he encountered a man at a service station. Believing the individual to be a prisoner he was seeking, Chief Rickels took him into custody.
As Chief Rickels attempted to place the suspect into his patrol car, the situation took a fatal
turn. The man suddenly produced a handgun and opened fire on the unsuspecting police chief. Despite being struck multiple times, Chief Rickels demonstrated immense bravery and managed to draw his own weapon. In a final act of duty, he returned fire, killing his assailant on the spot before he succumbed to his own injuries and collapsed.
The life of Jesse Franklin Rickels was tragically cut short, leaving behind a grieving family and a shocked community. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter. The man who shot him was killed at the scene, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with the chief's death. The incident left an indelible mark on the small town of Warrior, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who wear the badge.
