On the night of July 27, 1941, Chief of Police Jesse Franklin Rickels, aged 48, was on duty in Warrior, Alabama. Around 11:30 p.m., while stationed at a local service station, he observed a man driving into the parking lot. Chief Rickels approached the individual, placed him under arrest, and escorted him back to his patrol car. As he was securing the man in the vehicle, the suspect drew a concealed handgun and opened fire, striking Chief Rickels multiple times.
