On April 4, 1951, 61-year-old Constable Sam Dewitt Linn of Jefferson County, Alabama, was fatally shot while investigating reports of illegal gambling and alcohol consumption at the Alden Village mining camp in Graysville. Accompanied by Chief of Police Santford Robert Harrison Howton, Constable Linn arrested nine individuals for gambling, releasing them on written promises to appear in court.
