On April 21, 1951, at approximately 5:30 A.M., Chief of Police Santford R. Howton of Graysville, Alabama, and Constable Sam Linn of Jefferson County responded to reports of drinking and illegal gambling in the Alden Village mining camp. Upon arrival, they discovered a group of men engaged in a dice game. The officers arrested nine individuals for gambling and released them on a written promise to appear in court.
