On January 11, 1976, Deputy Sheriff Dennis Rowe, aged 25, of the Winston County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was fatally shot while performing his duties. That evening, Deputy Rowe and his colleague, Deputy Chuck Thompson, were on night patrol near Haleyville when they stopped to assist a young man whose car had veered into a ditch.
