In the late hours of a Sunday in March of 1978, the life of a young, White male named Thomas Lee Campbell was tragically cut short. At 28 years old, Campbell was serving as a Technical Sergeant with the United States Air Force Security Forces. On the evening of March 26th, he was dispatched to a residence in Maxwell Heights, a community of off-base military housing situated near Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, following a report of an intruder. The routine call, however, would soon turn fatal.
Within moments of his arrival at the scene, the sound of gunfire pierced the night air. Fellow responding officers from both the Security Forces and the Montgomery Police Department discovered Sergeant Campbell grievously wounded. He had sustained three gunshot wounds and was struggling to breathe. Despite being rushed to the base hospital, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
An intensive search of the area was immediately launched, leading to the apprehension of a 16-year-old male suspect. The weapon used in the shooting was identified as a. 22 caliber rifle. The teenage suspect was subsequently tried and convicted of murder as a juvenile. As a result of the conviction, he was held in custody until he reached his 21st birthday.
