On June 22, 1979, 20-year-old Bonita Beatrice Carter was fatally shot by Birmingham police officer George Sands in the Kingston neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. Carter, a recent graduate of Hayes High School and a choir member at Parker Memorial Baptist Church, was living with her parents near Jerry's Convenience Store, the site of the incident.
